Creating Missional Habits

2025 is here. As always, time moves forward and life with all its complexities keeps on happening. Like many others, I often think about New Year’s resolutions, once January the 1st arrives. Sadly, like many others, my resolutions often don’t make it too far along!  Part of the failure comes from my tendency to talk about resolutions, rather than thinking about habits. Habits develop into systems that eventually lead to fulfilling resolutions.  In other words, instead of making “watching less TV a resolution”, I could be more effective in cultivating habits like reading and exercising in the evening, that will organically lead to less TV time.

Missions and our call to the Great Commission are also strengthened when we reframe them as habitual rather than as a resolution. You may have made yourself a 2025 resolution to get “more involved in missions”. That is, as an aspiration, rather commendable and not a minor thing. What if you take a next step by thinking of habits that support your resolution: Sharing the gospel at least once every week, praying for unreached peoples’ groups 3 times a week, writing encouraging letters to missionaries once a month, or adopting a missionary’s family by sending them Christmas presents. As many other aspects of our Christian life, small consistent mission steps translate into eternal Kingdom impact. All these actions are not only attainable and trackable but will eventually lead to the fulfillment of your New Year’s resolution: to get more involved in missions.

May God continue to give us the wisdom to create a life full of missional habits for the sake of his name and his glory. And, of course it is my prayer you will have a blessed and happy 2025!
